“It is a Christian obligation to vote, and more than that, it is the Church’s responsibility to help get souls to the polls.”

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry

Every election is billed as the most important one of our lives, but the hyperbole feels especially true this year. Each day the stakes seem to get higher as voters have to decide what kind of future we want for our country. While our tendency as Christians may be to be “in the world, but not of the world,” Bishop Curry reminds us that it is our Christian obligation to participate in shaping our world according to the principles and teaching of Jesus Christ.

This year we are increasing our commitment to election education and mobilization through the Vote Faithfully initiative of the Episcopal Public Policy Network. Over the next three months we will be sharing thoughts and ideas about how each of us can get involved in the election process by supporting ballot measures that expand justice and equality for Missourians, helping you determine which candidates share our values, and increasing civic dialogue among our neighbors.

The Rev. Aaron Rogers is organizing a Vote Faithfully Academy which will serve as a deeper introduction to these ideas. Our newly refreshed diocesan website has a Vote Faithfully page fully stocked with resources on a variety of issues our parishioners may want to consider before making their voting decisions in November. And our Proclaim emails and social media feeds will offer a wide range of voices sharing their thoughts on why and how to get more involved in the democratic process.

This year the stakes are high, but our ideals are higher. If we all find a way to take action, and Vote Faithfully, we can make our country a more perfect union.

Bishop Deon Johnson shares how the past and the future play important roles in his decision to vote in every election.
