St. Louis and surrounding counties are set to see an increase in Spanish speaking people among us and becoming permanent residents in our area, establishing businesses and bringing their unique footprint to our schools, churches, local/regional culture, and friendships. It was thought this increase would happen over the next decade, but current demographic statistics indicate it has already begun and is happening more quickly than anticipated. “According to the latest U.S. Census data, there are now about 13,900 more in the region than in 2022, and it is the largest Hispanic or Latino population increase the area has ever seen.” (STLNPR)

For this reason, being a welcoming presence for our Latinx sisters and brothers in Christ (nuestro hermanas y hermanos  in Cristo), is a current priority. I hope every church in our diocese will make an effort to learn just a little Spanish to use in our Sunday liturgies. Resources for this are provided on this page in text and sound audio.

Additionally, learning about and celebrating the many countries represented by Latinx people (gente) among us will help dispel falsehoods and diminish prejudices against them – something our Baptismal vows compel us to do.

A Latinx Ministry Development team will be assembling this year to improve our resources and reach within our diocese. To join this team, contact The Rev. Dr. Valori Mulvey Sherer, Latinx Missioner for the Diocese of Missouri.
