Top St. Louis musicians, including renowned soprano Christine Brewer and the 442s, are coming together to present a concert celebrating democracy and encouraging everyone to vote in the upcoming 2024 elections. The concert will benefit the League of Women Voters of Metro St. Louis, an organization that was initially formed at The Sheldon in 1919.
"Democracy works when we all participate," says Paul Rueter, retired executive director of The Sheldon, who is organizaing the concert along with Sheldon board member Dr. Richard Shaw. "With so many issues at stake in the upcoming elections, it is critical that we vote and encourage others as well. We are proud to support the important work of the League of Women Voters with this concert that celebrates democracy.
Highights include the premier of a new composition by Maness and performed by The 442s; Christine Brewer singing an aria from the opera Mother of Us All by Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein; Angel Love performing "Sojourner Truth" by Paul Reuter with trumpeter Mary Weber and bassist Anita Haggerman; and Duane Foster singing two works from Ragtime. The St. Louis Women's Chorale, under the directions of Leanne Latuda, will sing two works by Andrea Ramsey, including excerpts from her Suffrage Contada. Cheryl Walker, chair of The Sheldon Board of Directors, will emcee.
