November is Indigenous People's Heritage Month

November 2024 is a time to honor Indigenous communities and celebrate their vibrant history, culture, and contributions.

Find several happenings and events for November below.

November Indigenous-Honoring Worship on Saturdays

All are invited to come join in worship utilizing Indigenous prayers, mostly from the US and Canada, in the weekly “Rite III” worship held in the chapel at St. Martin’s on Saturday Evenings at 505 pm.

Readings will include two versions of the gospel appointed for that weekend, one from the NRSVue, and one from the First Nations Version which was created in collaboration with Native Christians and published in 2021. You can learn about the process of this new rendering of the New Testament and those who contributed here.

If you would like to browse through a collection of Indigenous prayers that have been gathered for use in your own parishes, please go here.

Diocesan Book Study for Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month. Join Mother Leslie in her role as Diocesan Missioner for Indigenous Engagement and people from around the diocese as we study and discuss the classic book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer.

Braiding Sweetgrass is a modern classic, a mixture of ecological and cultural history that advocates for a reawakening of our connections with native wisdom and with the creation upon which we depend. The author, Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer, is a distinguished professor of environmental biology at the State University of New York, a gifted writer and storyteller, and a member of the citizen Potawatomi nation.

If you are interested in Indigenous culture, botany, history, or creation care, besides just learning more about our indigenous kindred, this book will become one of your treasured resources. Even if you have read it before, come join in the discussion circle.

The book is available from online bookstores and also as an ebook.

Come join us as we discuss this book via Zoom on the following dates:
